Guns, Violence, and Insurance

Quick Overview

People buy insurance to cover the "normal" risks of their lives and businesses. What happens when an event that's so out of normal happens? Is there insurance to cover that event? In this session, Joe Harrington dives into the world of gun violence from an insurance perspective. You won't want to miss this very timely session.

In the wake of mass shootings, people besides the perpetrators find themselves pursued civilly or criminally to answer for a shooter's acts and provide some measure of justice to the victims. In response, several providers have developed insurance and risk management programs to help clients prepare for, mitigate, and recover from a violent attack.

This program will discuss the following topics:

  • The current state of legal liability for a shooter's acts;
  • Legal liability of private companies and public bodies for anticipating, preventing, and/or managing attacks on their premises;
  • The application of liability insurance to shootings; and
  • The application of property insurance in situations where a traumatic event results in the loss of use of an undamaged site.
